I feel arrogant for writing this, but job applicants should treat hiring managers, interviewers, and HR reps like hot models. Here are 4 reasons why:
- Supermodels don’t date just anyone and employers don’t hire just anybody.
- Employers get “hit on” by countless people every day.
- Like models, employers have a specific selection process.
- Employers can be intimidating and unapproachable.
So, how do you score your dream job with a stand-offish hiring manager? You approach with your “A” game, which includes a complete Portfolio: resume, cover letter, 3 letters of recommendation, and a sample project from school or work.
Doing this demonstrates high value and begins to build trust. Hiring managers will take extra time to see who wrote the letters of recommendation and check if your sample project aligns with the job description of your desired position.
Once an interview is scheduled, you stand your best chance with a “supermodel” interviewer if you have interesting and captivating stories. You should come up with 7 Go-to Stories of your past educational and work successes. This way you will “wow” the interviewer with your skills and values.
